Ian is a graduate go the Maryland Institute, College of Art ,where he received his BFA degree. Ian has also spent one year in Florence, Italy at the Studio Arts Center International, where he studied batik, painting, drawing, watercolour, basic Italian, and Italian Reneisance Art History. Ian met Zena at a two-person show at the Bendanne Gallery in Towson, Maryland in the fall of 1990 and became interested in Zena’s botanical and fantasy artwork at once. Ian came up to live with Zena and her mom in 1992. For the first nine years ,Ian worked strictly as a watercolour painter, creating images of botanical plants, flowers, elves, fairies, and fantasy creatures. Then, during the summer of 1999, Ian finished a series of batiks before working on a few more watercolour paintings. It was in the fall of 1999 that Ian decided to take a break from painting to work as a paper mache sculptor and created a small group of simple masks. Ian built several more masks that became more refined and complex over time. He finished and painted a wide variety of animals and celestial bodies that he painted with a combination of flat acrylic paint, metallic acrylic liquid colours, and pearlescent acrylic inks. Ian still builds masks from time to time but now mostly builds full sculptures of dragons, gryphons, frogs, insects and fish.
